Wind River Timberframes Shop

The mill delivered the second half of the timbers for our house on February 11. This load weighed about 48,500 pounds and included some of the largest timbers Wind River has used . . . 8" x 20" x 30'. Darby is using the forklift to unload 5,000 pound bundles of timbers. Here are some finished timbers in the shop. This timber has a 2" tenon on the close end. The end grain was just sealed with wax so the wood dries out slowly. This will help reduce splitting and checking. Here is a timber that Darby and I cut. The timber that joins this one is the same 8" width. It has a tenon and is notched to sit into the housing cut in the face of this timber. I just applied an oil finish to this timber — it really makes the grain stand out. Matt working on two rafter extensions. When the timbers are finished, they are stored outside in the yard. Here is a picture of a recently finished timber outside in the yard. This is an accurate representation of the color of the white oak with an oil finish. The pictures inside the shop were taken under mercury vapor lamps, so they were color corrected. I worked with Darby for three days, cutting a variety of timbers. Here I'm using a portable bandsaw to cut a curve into a brace for a rafter in the living room. [End of series. Return to the New House page.]
