Clouds

This is a cumulonimbus developing over the Chugach Mountains in Anchorage. Altocumulus clouds over Anchorage. The smooth shape is due to high winds aloft. The unusual shape of these clouds is caused by a phenomena called the Kelvin-Holmholtz instability. The red spot on Jupiter is another example of this effect. Cumulonimbus developing just east of Denver in a very interesting mushroom shape. Low stratocumulus clouds hanging over the Chugach foothills just before an 11:00 pm sunset in Anchorage. Stratocumulus illuminated by the sunrise over the Chugach range. The edges of three different fronts running into each other are painted by the clouds. Sunset over Kenai Lake. Sunrise in Anchorage Some interesting clouds seen about 10:30 pm north of Anchorage. Sunset over the Yukon River at about 1:00 am. Sunset at 30,000' as my flight descends into Chicago. This is a sunset we saw in late June as we drove through Montrose, Colorado. Here is a picture of the eclipse of the moon as seen from Denver, Colorado on September 27, 2015. Another picture of the eclipse. I took these two photos with my 35mm SLR and a 135mm zoom lens. [End of series. Return to the Photos page.]
